  • A‑Level: Mathematics (essential), Further Mathematics strongly preferred for Oxbridge; often a science such as Physics.

This is where I would be particularly careful.

A list of “top ten future degrees” can be useful for starting a conversation, but it should never be the final decision-making tool.

When I discuss university choices with families, I find it much more useful to work backwards from the student.


Start With Academic Strength

If a student struggles with Mathematics, choosing a highly mathematical Data Science or Economics degree simply because it appears future-proof may create unnecessary difficulty.

If a student loves Biology but dislikes laboratory work, some Biomedical or scientific degrees may not be as suitable as they initially appear.

The student's actual academic profile matters.


Then Look at the Course

Do not stop at the university name.

Read the modules.

Ask:

  • What will I study in Year 1?

  • What changes in Year 2?

  • Is there a dissertation?

  • Are there laboratory or practical components?

  • Is programming required?

  • Is there a placement?

  • Can I specialise later?

  • What assessment methods are used?

These details can make a bigger difference to the student's university experience than a small difference in ranking.


Then Check the Professional Route

This is particularly important for Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Psychology, Engineering, Actuarial Science and other regulated or professionally accredited areas.

A degree title does not automatically equal professional qualification.

Students should understand what happens after graduation before committing to the course.


What About Graduate Salaries?

Salary information can be useful, but it should be used carefully.

However, these figures do not represent a guaranteed salary for someone who chooses that degree.

Discover Uni specifically explains that earnings vary according to factors including region and other circumstances. Its course data also uses median figures, and some published results combine data from different cohorts when there are insufficient numbers for a single year.

So instead of asking:

“Which degree earns the most?”

I would ask:

“What do graduates from this particular course actually go on to do, and how does that compare with the career I want?”

That is a much more useful question.

 

International Students Should Check Before Applying

International students have an additional layer of research to complete.

Before adding a course to a UCAS shortlist, check:

  • exact international qualification requirements

  • required subjects

  • predicted and achieved grade requirements

  • English-language requirements

  • admissions tests

  • interview requirements

  • professional accreditation

  • visa and post-study considerations

  • whether the qualification supports the intended career in the student's eventual country of residence

This last point is particularly important for regulated professions.

A degree can be excellent academically but still require additional professional recognition in another country.

Families should therefore think about the whole pathway, not simply the three or four years spent at university.


A Better Way to Build a UK University Shortlist

Rather than starting with ten university names, I recommend creating a shortlist in stages.

Look at modules, assessment, teaching style, placement opportunities and professional accreditation.

This is increasingly important for competitive UK universities.

And do not choose a course simply because someone says graduates earn a high salary.

That approach takes more time, but it produces a much more realistic university decision.
